# Receipts for AI coding agents

Every agent run gets a receipt: what it changed, whether the checks really passed, and what it cost.

Free and open source. Runs on your machine. Works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and more.

## Install

```sh
pipx install openshard && openshard setup
```

Also works with `pip install openshard && openshard setup` or `uv tool install openshard && openshard setup`. After your next agent task, run `openshard last` to see the receipt.

**Setup prompt.** Paste this into your coding agent and it will set Openshard up for you:

```text
Set up Openshard in this repository so every agent run gets a receipt (what changed, whether it was checked, what it cost). Do it end to end, then report back.
1. Check that Python 3.11+ and git are available.
2. Install Openshard: `pipx install openshard`. If pipx isn't available, use `uv tool install openshard`. If neither is, create a virtual environment and `pip install openshard` into it. Don't use sudo or --break-system-packages on this machine.
3. Confirm `openshard --version` works in this same shell. If it isn't found, fix PATH (for pipx: `pipx ensurepath`) and tell me what you changed.
4. From the repository root, run `openshard setup`.
5. Run `openshard doctor` and read the section for this agent.
Rules: only change Openshard's own setup files. Don't edit, commit or push any of my code. Don't print tokens or secrets.
Finish with three short lines: what's installed, what `openshard doctor` says for this agent (and how to fix anything marked ✗), and exactly what I need to do next, if anything. After my next task I'll run `openshard last` to see the receipt.
```

## How it works

Your first receipt in about five minutes. Install it once, then code the way you already do.

1. **Install (1 min).** One command. Finds your agents for you. No account needed.
2. **Code as normal (2 mins).** Use any agent you like. Nothing slows down. Runs on your machine.
3. **Read the receipt (3 mins).** What changed, which checks passed, what it cost.

## Why it exists

AI agents now write a real share of our code. But ask most teams which agent changed a file, whether anyone checked it, or what it cost, and they can't tell you. I built Openshard so you always can. (Michael Obasa, founder)

## Features: proof for every agent run

Every receipt answers the questions you'd ask before you merge.

- **Control receipt.** Who asked, what the agent was allowed to touch, and who signed off. If Priya needs Hannah's OK to change auth code, the receipt shows it.
- **Proof receipt.** What changed, and whether the tests really passed. Openshard re-runs the checks itself and signs the receipt, so any later edit shows.
- **Cost receipt.** Which agent and model did the work, the tokens it used, and what it cost. Every receipt has a real number, never a guess.
- **Merge gate.** A pass or fail check on every pull request. No receipt, or failed checks, means no merge.

## Integrations

Openshard sits next to your agents, GitHub and CI. You don't change how you work.

- **CLI setup.** One command. It finds your agents and starts recording.
- **Agent setup.** Paste one prompt into your agent and it sets Openshard up for you.
- **PR receipts.** Every pull request shows its receipt. The merge gate only lets verified work through.
- **Cloud agents.** Agents running in the cloud get receipts too, with no keys to copy.

Supported agents: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Google Antigravity, Grok Build, Hermes Agent, GitHub. Coming soon: Devin. Details: https://openshard.dev/integrations.md

## Platform

Free keeps receipts on your machine. Pro and Team sync them to your dashboard, so everyone works from the same record.

- **Dashboard.** Every receipt from every agent and teammate, newest first.
- **Team rules.** Decide what has to be true before agent work can merge. Set it once for the whole team.
- **Insights.** See which agents and models pass most often, and what each one costs you.

## Privacy: facts about your code, not your code

A receipt records what happened: files changed, checks run, what it cost. Your source code stays with you.

- **Runs on your machine.** On Free, receipts are made and kept locally. Nothing leaves unless you turn on sync.
- **Signed receipts.** Every receipt is signed, so an edit after the fact shows up.
- **Open source.** The core is Apache 2.0. You can read every line that runs on your machine.
- **Private by default.** Public commits only name the agent. Who it worked for is visible to your team alone.

## Pricing

Free on your machine. Pay when your team needs it. Teams pay per person, never per agent.

| Plan | Price | For |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 forever | For anyone using AI coding agents. |
| Pro | $20 per month | For one developer who wants their receipts online. |
| Team | $30 per person per month | For teams that want one shared record of agent work. |
| Enterprise | Custom | SSO, longer data retention or private hosting. |

## Latest changes

- **Oct 23, 2026: Sub-agents get their own receipts.** When Claude Code hands work to sub-agents, each one now shows up on the receipt with its own model, tokens, cost and result. (https://openshard.dev/resources/changelog/introducing-smart-alert-grouping.md)
- **Oct 22, 2026: Ready means ready.** Openshard now only says it's set up once a real receipt has reached your dashboard. (https://openshard.dev/resources/changelog/sola-v2-8-0-expanded-global-monitoring.md)
- **Oct 21, 2026: Merge gate: no receipt, no merge.** A GitHub check that reads each pull request's receipt and only passes verified work. Teams set the rule once in their settings. (https://openshard.dev/resources/changelog/sla-reporting-uptime-analytics.md)
- **Oct 20, 2026: Rules you can read.** Team policies are now built rule by rule, and Insights shows which agents are worth what they cost. (https://openshard.dev/resources/changelog/alert-routing-oncall-scheduling.md)

## FAQ

### What is Openshard?

It gives every AI coding agent run a receipt: what changed, whether the checks really passed, and what it cost. Read it yourself, share it, or make it a rule before code merges.

### Is it a code reviewer like CodeRabbit or Greptile?

No, and it works well alongside them. They comment on the code. Openshard proves what the agent actually did.

### Can an agent fake its own receipt?

No. Every receipt is signed, so any edit after the fact shows. Openshard re-runs the checks itself instead of taking the agent's word for it, and on Pro and Team the Platform keeps its own copy.

### How is this different from agent observability tools?

Observability tools show you what an agent did. Openshard proves it: each change gets a signed receipt with the checks re-run and the cost recorded, and the merge gate can require one before code merges.

### How do I set it up?

Run `pipx install openshard && openshard setup` in your repo. It finds your agents for you. After your next task, run `openshard last` to see the receipt.

### Which agents work?

Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode, plus Google Antigravity, Grok Build and Hermes.

### What's free?

Full receipts on your machine, for every supported agent, forever. You pay only to sync receipts online, share them with a team and use the merge gate. Pricing is per person, never per agent.

### Does my code leave my machine?

Not on Free. Receipts record facts about the work, like files changed, checks and cost, and stay local unless you turn on sync.
